The Venus Flytrap: The Official State Symbol of North Carolina

There are state birds, bugs, fish, flowers, and dogs—but did you know North Carolina has a state carnivorous plant? The Venus Flytrap is exceptional enough to deserve its own state symbol designation, and due to their rarity, it’s a felony to poach them. More than half of the carnivorous plant species in the United States are native to North Carolina, including pitcher plants, flytraps and sundews.

Hello, I purchased one of the 1x Large Adult Plant: Giant Venus Flytrap "B52" Dionaea Muscipula Cultivar for my grandson in Oct. of 2021. It was dormant for a time but not completely as we live in Florida. Do I need to repot this at some point? If so, would you mind telling me what type of pot and soil I should purchase? We only water with distilled water changing to fresh water once a month so we think it is doing well so far. Thank you for your time! From Staff: Yes, I would repot the plant at some point. It looks like your specimen is sprouting multiple growth points and is doing well for you!

Hello. I purchased the sarracenia purpurea venosa last summer and have watched it grow some. I have followed directions to let it go dormant during the winter. I purchased this 6" pot to transfer the plant this spring. Is it ok to transfer to this size pot or should it stay in the original pot sent with the plant a little longer? I love this plant and I think it is so beautiful. I look forward to it getting huge! Thanks.

Ordered the 3 plant VFT Collection. Plants arrived in four days, and planted into long fiber sphagnum moss as directed.  The “Red Dragon” and B52 cultivars were robust and healthy with multiple upright and open traps.  The all green cultivar, not sure of the name, was weak with many closed traps and twisted leaves.  I sent a photo to VFT.com with a request to replace the weak plant.  In response I received an explanation as to why there was nothing wrong with the plant; my request for replacement was declined.  So, 2 out of 3.  One Star off for sending me a weak plant; second Star off for not replacing the plant. From Joel:

That is normal. It's NOT health related. The other 2 plants are more hardened off though. The top plant is actually the B52 and it is a more recent arrival but it's not unhealthy. The bottom plant is the Flexx clone.

VFTs make prostrate leaves most of the time. They go through cycles where they make erect leaves and some where they make in between erect and prostrate leaves but most of the time they go through cycles where they make prostrate leaves. It does not have anything to do with their health one way or another. The currently prostrate leaves will not bend upwards. They are prostrate because that is how they are making their leaves right now.

VFTs ordinarily make heart shaped prostrate leaves in the Springtime, tall erect leaves in the Summertime, thin short prostrate leaves in the Fall, and small heart shaped leaves with small traps on them during their Winter dormancy, if they have leaves out then. But when VFTs are propagated through tissue culture and have not experienced a Winter dormancy yet, they sometimes make the seasonal leaves out of their correct season till they have their first Winter dormancy and then make them in sync with the correct season from then on. Prostrate Spring leaves sometimes curl downward a little in transit too. But this and the leaves being prostrate does not have anything to do with their health one way or another. This is also covered in your FAQ sheet.

In case you are wondering why these type of plants grow prostrate leaves and traps, it is so they can catch more bugs. Prostrate leaves and traps catch both flying and crawling insects. Erect leaves with traps up in the air catch only flying bugs. Guess which one winds up catching more bugs?

Why Purchase From VenusFlytrap.com?

We’ve been in business selling Venus flytraps full time since 2009.

When you make a purchase from our website, you are supporting an American family-owned local business. Our plants put food on our table and make our livelihoods possible. God bless America and long live the USA.

We only sell tissue-cultured, propagated, and seed-grown plants.

We never have and never will possess any wild-harvested plants in our facility. Part of what makes this hobby exciting for us is knowing we are doing our part to preserve nature through educating customers and providing them with genetically superior plants that have withstood the tests of time and demand.

We offer the most generously-sized carnivorous plants on the market.

The top photo shows a Venus flytrap we recently shipped to one of our customers. The bottom photo was emailed to us from a customer showing a competitor’s flytrap they bought and received. Both plants were labeled “large” on the respective websites they were purchased from. The photos speak for themselves.

You can rest assured that when you receive a “large” plant from us, it will indeed a large (if not larger) plant. We walk the extra mile to ship customers the largest plants available in the market. In fact, one of our “large” plants would likely be classified as a “monster” or “mother plant” on a competitor’s website for triple or quadruple the price if they listed the identical plant.

Free shipping!

Believe it or not, each of our carnivorous plants comes with free standard shipping, which typically takes between 2-6 days upon purchase. Due to the sheer volume of plants we ship, we have negotiated shipping rate savings, which we pass onto our customers. Expedited and overnight options exist for additional cost.

We breed some of the rarest and most desirable cultivars.

We offer rare cultivars of certain plants that are highly sought after by collectors. For example, we are fully stocked with the King of all Venus flytraps: the famous B52. We also have Dente, King Henry, and Akai Ryu (Red Dragon) varieties in stock at all times.

Our carnivorous plant prices are the lowest on the market.

We offer the lowest carnivorous plant prices on the market. We can afford to do this due to the sheer volume of plants we sell. We sold over 2MM individual plants in 2020 alone. Since we breed and propagate all of our own plants, we pass the savings along to our customers.

We only sell stable, healthy, and hardened plants.

One of the biggest problems in the carnivorous plant industry today is that many specimens are grown and sold in conditions that are very gentle. Unfortunately, many customers do not have the ability to match these gentle conditions that many of the plants they purchase have been grown in their entire lives. As a result, many hobbyists purchase carnivorous plants that needlessly die–not because carnivorous plants are difficult to keep alive and grow, but because the plants being purchased have not been hardened. Our hope is that our state of the art nursery will create a revolution in the carnivorous plant industry in the USA– permanently changing this so that carnivorous plants, not just ones sold by us, but by other plant vendors as well, will be sold in more hardened conditions so that more collectors may enjoy this hobby without as many setbacks.

Our plant inventory is consistent and well-stocked.

We estimate the carnivorous plant hobby is rapidly growing at 15% per year. We are the largest carnivorous plant sellers in the world by volume. In our state of the art facility, we strive to maintain consistent and stable year round inventory to quench our customers’ insatiable demand for plants. Each plant you see on our website is available for sale.

Our return policy protects customers.

Each order submitted through our website is backed up by our competitive and robust return policy. In the extremely rare event something happens to your shipment as a result of USPS or FedEx screwing up, we will immediately replace your entire shipment without any cost to you.

Why is the Venus Flytrap a Very Special Plant?

Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) are carnivorous plants that are native to the wetlands of North and South Carolina in the United States. These plants are known for their unique ability to capture and digest insects and other small prey.

Venus flytraps have a distinctive appearance with flat, green leaves that have sharp teeth-like structures along the edges. When an insect or other small animal lands on the leaf and triggers the tiny hairs on its surface, the trap snaps shut in less than a second, trapping the prey inside.

Once the prey is trapped, the Venus flytrap secretes digestive enzymes that break down the soft tissues of the insect or other small animal, providing the plant with the nutrients it needs to survive. After the digestion process is complete, the trap reopens, ready to capture its next meal.

Venus flytraps require specific growing conditions, including bright light, high humidity, and soil that is low in nutrients. They are often grown as houseplants, but they can also be found in the wild in their native habitat.

Although Venus flytraps are fascinating plants, they are also sensitive and require special care. They should not be fed meat or other animal products, and their traps should be allowed to close naturally without being triggered by human touch. Additionally, Venus flytraps may go dormant during the winter months and require a period of cool, dry conditions to survive.

You can learn about all of this and much more right here on our website!
